White’s role on the project was to help develop scientific instruments that could be attached to the outside of the balloon gondola to measure radiation exposure - and the larger team’s efforts were successful. The Strato-Lab team was laying the groundwork for humanity’s move to orbit. Soon afterward, he found himself working as a naval researcher on Project Strato-lab, which was being used to pioneer new experiments in the upper atmosphere and test the technology needed to keep humans alive at those altitudes. He had served in the Air Force during World War II before going on to study astronomy at The Ohio State University. White was a veteran of one of these earlier efforts. These early balloon flights managed to image the Sun in unprecedented detail, as well as make high-resolution observations of the larger cosmos that were hard to get from ground-based telescopes. #Future gazer how to#Plus, a balloon drifts, spins and tilts, meaning that engineers had to figure out how to stabilize and point the telescope while it was moving unpredictably.Ī few other efforts had already managed to successfully mount telescopes to balloons. The telescope was exposed to the open air of Earth’s upper atmosphere. Begun just a year before the creation of NASA, the project’s engineers and scientists had to develop a way to mount a working telescope to the roof of a balloon’s gondola. Navy, Air Force, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Project Stargazer was a joint effort between the U.S. Results published earlier this year show that modern balloon-borne observatories are now approaching resolutions once only possible with orbiting observatories. That means balloons could soon give the same space telescopes that replaced them a run for their money. Yet, in just the past decade, high-altitude balloons have seen something of a renaissance - and this time, instead of humans at the helm, the flights are fully robotic. And by the early 1970s, balloon-based experiments had given astronomers enough confidence to start launching artificial satellites with telescopes and other instruments into low-Earth orbit. You see, NASA and its fledgling Mercury Program had put John Glenn in orbit just six months before Stargazer's flight. And ultimately, that single flight marked the end of a brief era of high-altitude, crewed balloon flights. For the two men on board, William White and Joseph Kittinger, this was supposed to be just the beginning of a bright future for balloon-borne astronomy.īut despite their best efforts, Project Stargazer lost funding, leading to the cancellation of all but one of the mission’s four planned crewed flights. Only a handful of crewed balloon flights had ever reached greater heights. Over the course of the next 18.5 hours, the mission, called Project Stargazer, climbed to a staggering 82,000 feet (25 kilometers) in altitude and drifted above the desert. Their trip was the culmination of a years-long project, first started in 1957, that aimed to show that high-altitude balloons could be used to observe the cosmos, far from most of the interference of Earth’s twinkle-inducing atmosphere. Inside was a small research telescope and a suite of custom instruments designed to study the cosmos. On the morning of December 13, 1962, a Navy astronomer and an Air Force captain stepped out of the New Mexico Sun and into a small steel capsule attached to a nearly 300-foot-tall mylar balloon. A slow shutter speed allows the motion blur of the train to be captured. When photographing sports events, you will want to use a fast shutter speed in order to keep all of the fast-moving players in sharp focus, as shown in the photo above. Fast shutter speeds have the effect of freezing motion in the scene you are photographing, whereas slow shutter speeds will blur the motion in a scene, as seen in the photos below. If you are shooting something that is moving quickly, you will want to use a faster shutter speed. If you are taking a photo and it is too dark, you could use a slower shutter speed to allow the camera to gather more light. For example, a shutter speed of 1/2 will allow more light to touch the sensor and will produce a brighter photo than a shutter speed of 1/200. The slower your shutter speed, the more light will touch the sensor. Shutter Speed is the length of time the camera shutter remains open to let light into the camera sensor, and it is typically measured in fractions of a second. #F STOP AND ISO FULL#If you understand what shutter speed, ISO, and aperture are individually and how they work together, you will be able to take full control of your camera and be able to push the limits of what you can do with it! What is Shutter Speed? While most DSLR cameras have automatic modes that will set the right shutter speed, aperture, and ISO for you, these modes limit what you can achieve with your camera. “Exposure” refers to the amount of light the enters the camera and hits the digital sensor, and is basically a measure of how bright or dark a photo is. That is why it was decided to call the first scale “major scale” and the second “minor scale”. On the “minor” scale, these degrees are minor. On the “major” scale, these degrees are major. The difference of these scales is in the third, sixth and seventh degrees. Okay, back to the subject, you may be wondering why one scale is called “major” and the other “minor”. Each instrument has its pros and cons! Natural Scales However, the keyboard has numerous other facilitating advantages. That’s great, isn’t it? It means that we only need to memorize one shape for each scale! On the keyboard, we don’t have that privilege. Then check the generated notes against the table shown earlier. Try this out by making this same shape of the C major scale starting from the D note. Note: On the fretboard, to obtain the scale of another note (in addition to the “C” note that we show), just move this same shape to the desired note. Note: if you are a keyboardist/pianist and have not learned the sheet music yet, check the shapes on the keyboard below: Actually, the preference for the second description has a deeper meaning, as it facilitates the observation of harmonic functions, but don’t worry about that now.Ĭheck the sheet music and tablature of the major scale and the minor scale: C major scale But in literature you will probably find the second description, for the reason mentioned. In the first case, the notes E and B do not appear.ĭoes that change anything? It does not. Why? Simply because all 7 notes appeared in it (with or without alterations – sharp/flats). Usually the minor scale of C is written in the second way and not the first. Note that the scale is absolutely the same the only difference is that before it was written with sharps (#), and now it was written with the flats (b). We could then rewrite the above sequence as: do, re, mib, fa, sol, lab, tib, do. The notes re#, sol# and la# are equivalent, respectively, to mib, lab and tib. It goes like this: do, re, re#, fa, sol, sol#, la#, do … repeating the cycle. Just follow this sequence starting with the C note. You are already able to build that scale. The one called “ minor scale“, for example, is formed from the following sequence: tone, semitone, tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone… repeating the cycle. We will show you the major scale of the 7 basic notes:įor other scales, we have other sequences to be followed (other intervals). Do this as an exercise and then check it out below. In the second case, the major scale of G.įollowing the same logic, we can build the major scale of all the 12 notes we know. In the first case, we form the major scale of C. Notice how the same logic was followed (tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone). The scale would then be: sol, la, ti, do, re, mi, fa#, sol… We could use this same sequence (major scale) starting from a note that was not C, but for example: G. This sequence of distances was: tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone… repeating the cycle. On this scale, we start with the do note and follow a well-defined sequence of intervals until the return to the do note again. For example: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do… repeating this cycle. 139v.ĭemons are showing carrying souls in shoulder-baskets and other contrivances, or just dragging them along the floor with a rope.ĭetail of a bas-de-page scene showing a lecherous woman, from the ‘Taymouth Hours’, Yates Thompson MS 13, f. St John’s visions of the end of the world and the Last Judgement were frequently depicted in ‘Doom paintings’ on the walls and rood-screens of medieval churches. It was therefore visible to ordinary medieval people, for whom owning an illuminated manuscript was an unimaginable luxury, and the prospect of suffering an eternity in Hell an imminent possibility. BL MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPTS BLOG WINDOWSIt appears – most commonly as a hairy, fanged beast – in stained glass windows and wall- and panel-paintings as well. The rather horrifying motif of the Hell-mouth was not confined to medieval manuscripts. The unusual depiction of a Hell-mouth as a serpent reinforces this narrative connection as well as Lucifer’s agency in both events. The fall of the rebellious angels from Heaven, illustrated here in the Old English Hexateuch, foreshadows the later fall of man. The portal to Hell in Doom has an obvious antecedent in medieval art: the Hell-mouth, a representation of Hell as a gaping, often flaming, animalistic maw.
